The 4-3, 10-hour, rotating Shift Pattern is a common pattern that provides 24-hour coverage. This pattern is made up of 6 teams (or crews) and 3 overlapping 10-hour Shift Durations. This shift pattern occurs on a 3-week cycle, in which teams work for 4 days, then have 3 days off.

Over the course of the 3 weeks, teams will rotate through all 3, 10-hour shift durations. For example, team 1 would work 4 consecutive day shifts, have 3 days off, work 4 evening shifts, have 3 days off, work 4 overnight shifts, have three days off, and then repeat that cycle. The overlapping hours and days can be set to occur whenever is most convenient for your organization.

Pros of the 4-3, 10 Hour, Rotating Shift Schedule:

  • Employees work the same days, with the same team each week.
  • Employees work 40-hour weeks with 3-day weekends
  • Each week there is a day on which all employees are working

Cons of the 4-3, 10 Hour, Rotating Shift Schedule:

  • While 3 teams receive the weekend off, the other three teams never get the weekend off
  • The overlapping hours and days could be a waste of labor and time
